As everyone knows, as of the most recent BC provincial election, the riding of Chilliwack-Kent has been expanded and renamed Chilliwack-Hope. This is great news for everybody that lives in Hope, as they now get to share in that most wonderful of BC dreams: having Barry Penner as your MLA. Truly wondrous times for the upper Fraser Valley.

But there’s a dark lining to this silver cloud.

Barry represents and lives in the electoral district of Chilliwack-Kent. (About Your MLA – BarryPenner.com)

Hmmm… A simple oversight perhaps? Or perhaps not…

Each MLA represents a particular part of British Columbia. Barry Penner is the MLA for Chilliwack-Kent. (BC Legislature – BarryPenner.com)

For whatever reason, Barry Penner doesn’t seem to want to fully admit he represents Hope.

As MLA for Chilliwack-Kent, I have the honour of serving residents of eastern Chilliwack and Sardis, Rosedale, Agassiz, Popkum, Harrison Hot Springs, Cultus Lake, Chilliwack River Valley, Seabird Island and Columbia Valley. (MLA’s office – Here to help! – BarryPenner.com)

Columbia Valley? Ouch.

Hope isn’t considered worthy of being listed under his Links of Interest, either – Chilliwack, Harrison, Kent (Agassiz’s mild-mannered alter ego), and even the FVRD get Barry Penner’s Virtual Thumbs Up Of Approval, but no mention of Hope.

So, why is this? What is the matter with Hope? Honestly, I have no idea. It could be the chainsaw carving… that’s kinda weird, I guess. Especially to the Environment Minister, all those helpless trees. But that probably isn’t it. Barry Penner doesn’t seem like the type to frown upon artistic expression via power tools (so long as they are electric and not gas-powered, of course).

Still, there’s obviously something wrong with Hope. I mean, Barry Penner thinks so.

And don’t even get him started on Yale, Spuzzum, or Boston Bar. Yeesh.
