Well, I guess I should have seen this coming. Barry Penner isn’t exactly one for half measures. Why just step down from cabinet with a promise to not run in the next election, when you can do all that, then get a new job at an impressive and prestigious (well, I assume) Vancouver firm a few years ahead of schedule? Best of both worlds, some would say. In fact, if you look closely at that press release, Private Citizen Penner is going to be in charge of their environmental and renewable energy practice in BC. So, once again Barry Penner proves that no matter how hard you try, you can’t keep Barry Penner away from his true love, The Environment. I now understand why El Gordo quit all that time ago. It wasn’t due to HST backlash or anything silly like that. It was due to shame at ruining the best Minister/Portfolio matchup since John Les was appointed Minister of Looking Kinda Sleazy.
Well, Barry Penner, the public still has you for the rest of the year, so don’t sit back yet! I’m sure you have at least one more great photo-op in you, right? Just something for us to remember you by?
Oh well, if the recent history of Chilliwack representatives holds, MLA Fintry Penner should be sworn in shortly.

You know, I’ve been thinking. Yeah, Barry Penner is awesome and all, but doesn’t that seem like it’s a lot of work? Wouldn’t it be better if he were just… normal. No pressure to fix everything or blow everyone away every time you make a speech. Just show up and be a totally normal guy. That would be something, wouldn’t it?
In fact, it’s probably about time for a little visual refresh of this website. The whole ‘trees and clouds’ thing was alright when he was a fun-loving happy-go-lucky Environment Minster, but Barry Penner’s come a long way since then. He’s now a serious person with a serious job dealing with serious things. It’s time this serious website reflected that.
Yeah, this is a layout befitting such a serious, normal person. Excellent.

The Environment is saved! At least, Gordon Campbell clearly thinks so. Why else would he pull Barry Penner, Mr. The Environment Himself, off of that all important portfolio after all these years?
Now, it seems Barry Penner has to turn his laser-like focus and incredible getting-things-done-edness ability to being the Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation. He’s going to Relate to Aboriginals and Reconcile things all over the place… whatever that means. I’m sure he’ll figure it out soon enough. It can’t be that hard.
Don’t worry, he’s still a fan of The Environment. It’s just grown up now and no longer needs Barry Penner’s master guidance.
