“British Columbians are becoming leaders in the global drive for fisheries sustainability,” said Penner. “Credible eco-labelling is increasingly important for our industry to succeed in competitive markets, and it’s an important part of our government’s strategy to promote B.C. seafood.”

It’s important to have credible labling for seafood. You don’t want it to look… fishy.

I’m sorry. That was terrible.

Barry Penner is a friend to all animals, but it seems that not all animals are friends of Barry Penner. Check out this exchange from an interview with The Minister:

What keeps you up at night?

In addition to my wife’s cat? There’s always lots more work that needs to be done. I’m often thinking about the challenge of climate change and, these days, the upcoming meeting in Copenhagen [December’s United Nations Climate Change summit] and what the world’s response to it will be. - BC Business

I feel your pain, Barry… I feel your pain.

The new ‘no phoning-while-driving’ law won’t be any problem for Barry Penner. He’s ready for it, you see:

Last year, my wife and I purchased a used hybrid-car that has a hands-free phone option built into the sound system. My cellphone also has a “speaker phone” mode so I can use it without holding the phone to my ear. – Chilliwack Times

See, he has a super high-tech phone with something called “speaker phone” mode. Incredible. I bet it even tells him who is calling and what time it is and all sorts of cool stuff like that.  Just wait until that becomes available to the general public. It’ll be like the Jetsons.

It’s also a nice of him to very subtly mention his car is a hybrid… just in case somebody has forgotten that he’s in charge of The Environment.

Barry Penner loves water. A lot. It seems like everything he does in some way relates to water. I mean, it makes a degree of sense, as so much of The Environment relies on the wet stuff to work properly, but perhaps with Barry Penner there is a little… more going on there.

“One of the things that gave me concern [happened] this past summer, in August. The Ministry of Environment issued [an advisory] which was in my memory unprecedented,” Penner said.

“It was a high stream flow advisory — in August during what amounted to a drought. How could that be? Because it was so hot that the glaciers on the coast were melting at a very rapid rate.

(…)

“Those kinds of things really trouble me because that’s our heritage up there. I view that as our insurance plan for long droughts. When it starts melting at such a rate that the rivers are raging, with no precipitation contributing, all coming from the ice melt, you know you are drawing down your heritage assets at a rapid rate.” – Vancouver Sun

See? Water, in addition to being the source of our province’s finances and a wily trickster, also makes up our very heritage.

Does anyone else remember the Heritage Minute that showed nothing but a frozen glacier for 60 seconds? Barry Penner does.
